Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

Hoot was a very good book.  It is about a boy named Roy who just moved from Montana to Florida.  While he's riding the bus to school he sees a kid about the same size as him running as fast as he can across peoples' lawns and driveways.  The next day he sees in the newspaper that someone put alligators in the porta potty that was in the same vacant lot where a Mother Paula's pancake house was going to be built.  Roy keeps seeing in the newspaper that there have been vandalism crimes going on in Mother Paula's pancake lot. Roy wonders if it has any thing to do with the boy that he on the bus.  A few days later Roy sees the same kid again that he saw on the bus. The boy brings Roy down to the Mother Paula's lot. The boy says that he doesn't have a name but people call him Mullet fingers.  Mullet fingers shows Roy that there are a ton  of  burrowing owls down in holes.   Mullet fingers said that he was the one doing all those things to try and stop Mother Paula's from building a pancake house in that vacant lot.  If they bulldoze all the land then all of the owls will die.  On the day of the Mother Paula's opening ceremony Roy, Mullet fingers, and Mullet finger's step sister Beatrice tell every body at the opening ceremony that if everybody is quiet for 60 seconds then the owls will come out of their holes.  Nobody believes that there are any owls and they just want to start building the pancake house but they listen.  After about 40 seconds the owls start coming out of their holes.  Everybody was amazed.  The pancake house manager knew that there were owls there but he didn't want to tell anybody because he wanted their pancake house there. The manager was arrested for trying to bulldoze the owls.  The vacant lot turned into an owl safety center.  There is a movie based on the book Hoot.

The Potato Chip Puzzles by Eric Berlin

This book was very entertaining.  It is the second book in the Winston Breen series.  This book is about when Winston is at school and a mysterious letter comes in the mail and it turns out to be a puzzle.  Winston solved the puzzle and it said that three people from his school will be on a puzzle contest against other schools.  When Winston and his friends Jake and Mal  and one of their teachers are leaving from the potato chip factory when there is a popping sound and they get a flat tire!  While doing the puzzles they talk to the other teams and all of them have gotten flat tires or other things that have slowed them down from solving the puzzles in the puzzle race. Someone has been causing all of this but nobody can figure out who!  I liked this book even more than the first one in the series.

The Puzzling World of Winston Breen by Eric Berlin

This book was very adventurous.  I like it because every 20 pages or so there is a puzzle that you can try to solve.  It is about a kid named Winston who loves puzzles.  On his sister's birthday he buys her a special box that has a secret compartment with puzzle pieces in it.  Strange people start asking him about the puzzle pieces.  One time a person came up to him and said that there are more puzzle pieces than just the ones that Winston owns.  Winston figured out that the puzzle pieces lead to a hidden treasure so Winston and his sister team up with a librarian and two strangers who all have puzzle pieces of their own to try to find the treasure.

Red Zone by Tiki and Ronde Barber

Red Zone was an exciting book.  It is about Tiki and Ronde Barber on the Hidden Valley Junior High football team.  They try to win even though a few games ago their coach moved on to coach a high school.  They also have to fight the fact that most of their star players got the chicken pox.  The authors, Tiki and Ronde Barber, used to be in the NFL.  If you like football then you would like this book.

Big Nate In a Class By Himself By Lincoln Peirce

Big Nate is a funny book.  One day Nate,a sixth grader, opens a fortune cookie that says ''Today you will surpass all others''.  Nate keeps wondering when he will surpass all others because for the last six hours he's been doing the complete opposite of that.  He's tried to surpass all others in lots of different things but it hasn't gone very well.
Big Nate has lots of cartoon illustrations in it.
You should read Big Nate.  The next book in the Big Nate series is Big Nate Strikes Again.

Swindle by Gordon Korman

I just read Swindle by Gordon Korman. It was really good. It is about a mean collector named S.Wendell Palomino (a.k.a Swindle) who cheats Griffin out of a rare Babe Ruth baseball card.  Griffin gathers a group of friends to try and get the card back.  They plan to pull a heist the night before Swindle sells the card at an auction.  The starting bid is $200,000!  But Swindle has a few suprises up his sleeve.  Read the book to find out what happens next.
